March 11, 2024 : I’ll be presenting a dry run of a new seminar I’m creating called
“From Hawaii to Nashville : The History of Steel Guitar”
My goal is a one hour presentation suitable for libraries, schools, retirement communities, and community venues that outlines the development of the steel guitar from the mid 19th century in Hawaii to the modern pedal steel guitar used today in all forms of music. Most people associate steel guitar, and the pedal steel guitar, with Country music. That instrument owes its development to the popularity of Hawaiian steel, and it’s world wide adoption in the 20th century, along with the efforts of inventors, artists and manufacturers that have been chasing the sound of steel guitar for nearly 150 years. I’ll be posting more information as I iron out the bugs and get a solid presentation.
In the course of an hour I’ll discuss the timeline of development, tell stories, and then augment the talk story part, by playing some key instruments and styles from Slack Key acoustic guitar, to early acoustic steels like Dobros, to the more modern electric steel guitars from the mid century, and finally the pedal steel. Music, talk, discussion, and hopefully something educational and entertaining. More later, Chrids
